My super hero cape

I have a super hero cape, I just wear it backwards. It's called an "apron".

I love my aprons. They are just a bit of fabric, but they keep me on the straight and narrow. They remind me of my duty.

It's got nothing to do with the clothing-protection factor. For that they are pretty much useless, actually. I tend to get all my muck on my knees (toddler face height) my shoulders (carried toddler face height) and my arms (the only bit Bug can reach when she's sitting at the table, covered in lunch, and wants some mum affection.) For some ironic reason, my apron tends to stay mostly clean.

I find it very difficult to slack off when I'm wearing an apron. I try to sit on the couch while wearing it, but then a massive feeling of the guilts washes over me and instead of spending a happy half hour on the web, I end up thinking about the washing that could probably do with folding, or the floor that needs a sweep...

When I write it like this it sounds like a burden, but there is nothing nicer than sitting down in the evening knowing that I've done a full days work at my profession of housewife. It's satisfying. It gives me a sense of pride. I enjoy my rest more because of it. And if I don't wear my housewife uniform, my apron, I struggle to reach this endstate.

So my apron goes on as soon as I'm dressed in the morning, and doesn't come off until the kids are in bed and it's time for me to rest, too.

Do you wear a super housewife cape?

  1. I've got one apron that I've never worn and up until last week lived in a draw but now it hangs next to the black board in the kitchen. I'm hoping it will motivate me to do more baking. I would love to have your mind set about wearing one but until I can give up working at night that's not going to happen. I slept for most of today and a good part of yesterday as I've been unwell (think its tonselitise) as of tomorrow night I've got 4 nights straight so I'm trying to get myself better to get through. So I usually get up after 3 or 4hrs sleep take my 2 boys to school then come home and go flat out getting as much done as I can before lunch then my little girl and I sleep for 2hrs get the boys from school, get tea ready, help with home work and get ready to go to work by 545. So I don't get much time to enjoy my days at the moment. But hopefully that will change when hubby gets a new job. Was wondering if you were posting a blog today glad I checked before going to bed. 1. My god, girl! That's insane! YOU are a superhero!! No cape required :)

I hope you starts feeling better soon and everything works out for your husband's job.

I try to post here every day, but I've been busy during the day (schools back in, and all our activities have started back up) so instead of a morning post, I've had to change to nights. Thanks for checking back though, I'm flattered!

  2. OMG, I love this! I also never understood the point of an apron, since it seems all the messes always get everywhere EXCEPT the apron LOL. But I like this idea of it being part of our uniform! I am totally going to start wearing mine to give me that extra bit of motivation during the day - love it!

  3. I must admit I don't wear a superhero cape, unless I'm dressed in my good clothes, just before a party or having people over for dinner, and I'm finishing off some cooking in the kitchen, and I don't want to get my clothes dirty. Guess I'm just not a true superhero ;-)

    1. Not all superheroes wear capes!

Remember the wise words of Edna from The Incredibles? "No capes!"

Perhaps you are just both more undercover and more practical than I am?

  4. Love the thought! It would be easy to let the days roll over you at home (I have enough trouble even with study deadlines!) Lovely way to distinguish 'on duty' from relaxation time.

I wonder what a student's cape would look like?...

    1. From my experience, it's made of mi goreng wrappers and diet coke lids.

  5. I always heard this about shoes. I don't wear a cape, or shoes either one! But I love the feeling of accomplishment after a busy day's work!

  6. Oh I DO wear an apron - I make/collect them....people have actually started sending me them because they know about (and laugh at) my insistence to wear one each day. How awesome to hear someone else does too...and I agree it does inspire getting work done. There is no better feeling at the end of the day having achieved something conrete (I even like it when my old bones are protesting from the hard work).

  7. Ooh, I love the superhero cape idea. I'm going to steal it and pretend it was mine. I have my own little collection of aprons, mostly vintage although I added a Peter Rabbit number a few weeks ago. They're gorgeous but I hardly ever wear them. I just got up and put one on the kitchen bench so I'll see it in the morning. I wonder if they make a wonder woman apron? Hmmm...

  8. I love this post! Its so true. I made my first apron recently as part of rhondas swap, I enjoyed making it so much I made one for myself. I am still getting used to having one and remembering to wear it. The real problem I have is that I am so proud of it I wouldnt dare let it get dirty!

  9. The line you opened with is fabulous, I love it.

I have a couple of little vintage aprons I bought from op shops (more to look at, rather than wear). I also have a big ugly old thing that looks like a butcher's apron I wear when I'm cooking just before guests arrived and I don't want anything to splatter on my clothes. It never occurred to me to wear an apron during the day like a uniform, but I actually love this idea. Think I'll give it a go tomorrow (with the sweet vintage one, not the butcher's one lol!)

  13. I love this post. I am an apron-wearer, too, and its nice to know Im not the only one left (most of my friends politely chuckle at my antiquated apron-wearing-ways). I wear them both for the reasons you described (it feels like my uniform, I just feel more ready to work when I have it on) but also to protect my clothes a bit. I am short and always end up with a wet and dirty stomach area from kitchen work so a nice thick apron helps to at lest keep me semi-dry and free of food smudge.

Thanks for sharing this and thanks for starting this link party. Lots of fun!
